The physical environment in which I live is extreme; on the edge of a continent where the Coastal range plummets into the vast depth of the Pacific Ocean.
I grew up in a very different geography, a narrow river valley in the West Kootenay's. So finding myself confronted with an ocean instead of a river, I was overwhelmed by the depth. Over the many years I have spent on the edge I have slowly come to appreciate the beauty and diversity on and in our shores. What was once unfathomable, has become a visual inspiration that links me to this geographical place, I now call home.
Parallel to my tangible connection to the coast, exists another connection: a symbolic one with water. The ocean is the primordial ocean, the mother of all that lives. As a woman and a mother this resonates with me and the beauty within it's depths awes me.
Using sgraffito as my method, I transfer hand drawn sketches onto my thrown ceramic pieces. My pieces are fired to Cone 10 Reduction.
